Laboratories for GMO detection

In accordance with the Management of Genetically Modified Organisms Act (Official Gazette of the RS 23/2005 and 21/10),  and with theDecree implementing Regulation (EC) on genetically modified food and feed and Regulation (EC) concerning the traceability and labelling of genetically modified organisms and the traceability of food and feed products produced from genetically modified organisms(Official Gazette of the RS No. 84/2005), it is necessary to determine the presence of GMOs for official supervision.

For GMO detection, various techniques are used, especially methods of molecular biology, which, in addition to the detection of GMO presence, enable determining GMO share in the sample.

In Slovenia, three laboratories deal with GMO detection.

• Crop and Seed Science Department at the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia

• Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia
